Using Grisaille Method for Creating Better Paintings

Level: Beginners to Intermediate

The class will be using just black and white to paint several portraits of a Pear. The class will include things like how to:

  • Identify various types of lights and darks on an object
  • A quick way to determine value relationships
  • Best way to get started in applying values
  • Creating lost and found edges
  • When to and when not to blend
  • Finding value shapes to improve your drawings

Supplies needed:

  • Suggested Brushes
    • No 6 round
    • 1″ background brush
    • (If you have a variety of brushes just bring those)
  • Pallet knife
  • 1 or 2 – 8 x 10″ canvas boards
  • Acrylic paints
    • Black
    • White
  • Spray bottle
  • Paper towels
  • Gloves
  • Pallet (suggest an empty egg carton) or pallet that has 4 or 5 wells for holding paint
